Anant Adury obtains the National Master Title at 13 Years of Age

Anant Adury Earned the National Master Title at 13 Years of Age by Stacia Melinda Pugh, Progress With Chess | November 6th, 2021

There has seemingly been an uprising of young players in NE Ohio who have been rising up and challenging the local Masters.  Among them is the very impressive Anant Adury.  Anant was a modest 1400 rated player as recent as 2018, and yet in the first part of 2021 he found himself nearing the coveted 2200 USCF rating mark.  On June 19th, 2021 he crossed over 2200 USCF at the Fist Bump Open which secured him the National Master Title before his 14th birthday in July.

We interviewed NM Adury to hear how he achieved this feat and to learn his plans for the future.  He also shared a game where he slowly outplays another National Master and wins with a brilliant sacrifice at the end of the game.

Interview with National Master Anant Adury

What are your plans in terms of your chess journey for 2021-22?

My plans for 2021-2022 include sticking to an intense study schedule, so I can learn as much as possible with the time I have. I also plan to play in larger tournaments. This will help to build my stamina, and it will improve my game even more.

Do you have any chess goals?

My next goal from here is to keep improving and playing, in order to get my USCF rating to 2300. After that, I would like to become a Fide Master (FM).

Has the pandemic helped or hurt your chess and if so, why?

The pandemic has substantially helped me improve. When the pandemic hit, most things had shut down, giving me valuable time to study.

What is your chess style?

My chess style revolves around playing complicated positions. I enjoy this, as it is more fun to try to navigate through complex situations, due to the many possibilities that are present.

Who is your favorite chess player, past and present?

My favorite player of the past is Mikhail Tal, because of his risk-taking ability. That  showed that he was not afraid of loss. His passion for the game motivated him to learn more, and he went on to become the 8th world champion. My favorite player of the present is Sam Shankland. The reason he is my favorite player is because he became a top USA player, after starting chess at the age of 12. This shows the amount of interest and motivation he had at a later age.

What does the NM title mean to you?

It means a lot to me, because it is a stepping stone to bigger achievements. It lets me know that I am learning on the right path. It also made me realize that I am in the top percentile of chess players in the USA. This tells me that there will be even more difficult players at future tournaments.

Any advice for 1600 rated players like me who want to improve?

I would suggest working mostly on tactics to improve pattern recognition. It is essential to develop a tactical foundation. Any reliable chess website, such as lichess, chesstempo, or chess.com is suitable for solving them. I would also recommend seeing the games of top players, so you can learn from them which would improve your quality of play.
