Menlo Park Chess Championship Played Online
This year, with the COVID-19 pandemic putting an untimely end to the school year, PWC and the chess fiends of Menlo Park could not stand the thought of the classes and tournament cancellations adding to a long list of disappointments for this year, so they were moved online! After 3 weeks of instructive online classes, the Menlo students were ready for their final championship tournament!
The tournament took place this past Friday on May 1st in the late afternoon. The 46 chess ninjas of Menlo Park Academy who participated in this event, had 4 games of chess to play on ChessKid.com, a chess site designed specifically for kids and with extra safety for users built in. There were 3 sections to accommodate all skill levels and 10 of the best performing players earned Certificates of Achievement (pictured below), such as Snehan Mukherjee, who won all four of his games in the top Advanced Section.

The Menlo Park Chess Program is one of the best in Northeast Ohio and couldn’t happen without the amazing administrative staff and parent volunteers. Thank you! Special thanks goes to Shruti Aring who plays a critical role in the success of this program at Menlo which commonly attracts 90+ kids, and is the only program to feature an Advanced+ class, affectionately referred to as Super Advanced, a credit to the work ethic culture developed at this learning institution for gifted kids.

Next up is the Northeast Ohio Scholastic Online Championship this Saturday on May 9th @ 10:00 AM which will be played on chess.com. This tournament, similar to our GCSCL events, will feature sections for all skill levels and REAL TROPHIES and participation chess medals that will be mailed to your home.
