Steven Kwan and Progress With Chess host the Second Annual Check on Your Mate Chess Challenge
June 3, 2026 – Cleveland, Ohio
The Cleveland Guardians and CMSD students come together to celebrate chess and mental health awareness!
Progress With Chess was honored to have been invited by Steven Kwan and the Guardians to Progressive Field to facilitate a very special event composed of two chess tournaments to promote Mental Health Awareness in the scholastic chess community.
The top students from our Cleveland Metropolitan School District Chess League competitions were selected to compete in the main event – an 8v8 team challenge against Steven Kwan, Tanner Bibee, Slade Cecconi and Travis Bazzana, Guardians mental skills coach Brian Miles, Browns long snapper Rex Sunahara, and Cavaliers guard Max Strus.
In addition, the event included a scholastic tournament, which attracted students from CMSD programs across Cleveland. Progress With Chess and the district arranged for students from our classes and competitions to be bussed to the event, and we provided the format for the games to accommodate the schedule. The tournament was directed by our experienced staff, and we provided chess equipment and awards to be used for the event.
