2026 Winter Tournament Rundown
First up, PWC was proud to partner with Discovery Chess and the Cleveland Charge to present Charge Chess Day on January 2nd, 2026 – a proper USCF rated chess tournament hosted at the iconic Public Hall, featuring trophy prizes for scholastic sections and cash prizes for open sections, as well as sports team giveaways. Admission included entry to the basketball game after the tournament, upstairs at the same venue, between the Cleveland Charge and the Long Island Nets! This event featured 87 players in 7 sections, G/30; d5, with a guaranteed prize fund of $1,000.

This coming Fall, Progress With Chess will be hosting 60 chess classes for students at locations across Cleveland and its surrounding suburbs. We are thrilled to play such an important role in shaping the future of our community, and to have been supported in our mission of promoting the game of chess for so many years.

The Check On Your Mate Chess Challenge
For Art’s Sake and Progress With Chess come together for Cleveland!
We were absolutely thrilled with the turnout for the first Check On Your Mate Chess Challenge hosted in partnership with For Art’s Sake, Steven Kwan, and the Baseball Heritage Museum! Progress With Chess was given full reign to do what we do best – promote the world’s greatest game in the heart of the world’s greatest city.
NEO Championship Brings Scholastic Chess Back to Akron!
The North East Ohio Chess Championship, organized and directed by Progress With Chess, proved to be an intense day for scholastic chess competitors, grades K-12, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic. Over 120 brave chess kids arrived to battle hard over the boards to compete for ratings points, trophies and $1,500 in scholarship prizes. The stakes were high and only the most steadfast could emerge victorious.
Community Comes Together at the 3rd East Side Open
It’s a rainy Saturday morning in May as people file into the East Cleveland Public Library. What begins as a slow trickle – locals looking to devour the latest books, and students using the computer lab – turns into a large diverse group of young and old alike competing in a free local chess tournament.
The 22nd Annual Carl Bowers Tournament
On March 20th, at the Louis Stokes Wing of the Cleveland Public Library, students throughout the Cleveland Metropolitan School District competed for individual and team trophies in the 22nd Annual Carl Bowers Tournament.
A Strong Finish for GCSCL in 2025!
Now in its 12th year, the 2025 Greater Cleveland Scholastic Chess League was a smashing success. This season, as in years past, we welcomed teams from every corner of the academic landscape in and around Cleveland—including the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, Akron Public Schools, numerous suburban public schools, Catholic schools, and charter schools.
The Inaugural Cleveland Rec Center Tournament
On August 19th, 2023, players from across the Greater Cleveland area got together at the Zelma George Recreation Center to celebrate the game of chess in a friendly unrated competition hosted by Progress With Chess.
