Team trophies will be awarded to the winning teams after the conclusion of the Greater Cleveland Scholastic Chess League (GCSCL) final tournament Saturday, February 20th. Although this event is safely online due to the ever lingering pandemic, customized trophies are mailed home to the winners. Trophy winners are even featured on our GCSCL Honored Players Page. Who doesn’t love to see a champion with their trophy in hand?
But back to business, here are the current team standings and these teams will be facing off this Saturday on the chess board. Who will win? We will find out this Saturday!
Greater Cleveland Scholastic Chess League (GCSCL) Team Standings
Scholarship Leaders
The GCSCL series has sections designed for all levels and age groups and encourages players from all locations. There are trophies for anyone scoring three or more points in each section, participation awards for players attending at least one event, team awards, and a $1,000 scholarship for the top player in the Championship section, determined by adding the scores from each player’s top three events. There is also a $500 scholarship on the line for the U1500 Section.
A number of impressive performances in GCSCL #3
In GCSCL #3, IM Christopher Yoo of Dublin, CA, who won the open section with a perfect 4.0 score. Ralph Tan of Shaker Heights, OH, took second place with a 3.5 score and Mark DeDona of Middle Village, NY was third with 3.0.
Sharath Radhakrishnan of Westlake, OH won the Under 1500 section with a perfect 4.0 score. A logjam at second place included Adarsh Anumalasetty of Reno, NV; Shaknil Gurung of Akron, OH; Prajit Manivannan of Lithia, FL; David Jin of Santa Clara, CA; Henry Wang of Pepper Pike, OH; and Stephen Willy of Sammamish, WA. All finished with 3.0 points.
In the High School (grades 9-12) Under 1000 section, Harshavardan Sathish of Solon, OH took the top prize with a score of 3.5. George Happell of Columbus, OH, and Deric Tony Thomas of Solon, OH tied for second at 3.0.
Heri Ramadhani of Cleveland, OH, won the Middle School (grades 6-8) Premier Under 1000 section with a perfect 4.0. Pavantej Kamireddy of Austin, TX was a clear second with 3.5. Third place went to Martin Bala of Westlake, OH; Suhas Goli of Westerville, OH; and Nathan Zhang of Libertyville, IL; all with 3.0 points.
In the Middle School Under 500 section, Soren Franke of Avon Lake, OH, won with a 3.5 score. Lauren Satnic of North Royalton, OH, and Thea Sherck of Cleveland Heights, OH, tied for second with 3.0 scores.
Vanshika Myneni of Broadview Heights, OH and Spencer Early of Delmar, NY tied for first in the Elementary (grades K-5) Premier Under 1000 section with perfect 4.0 scores. A four-way tie for third included Nicky Ahn of Shaker Heights, OH: Luke Chao of Beachwood, OH; Arav Mathur of Broadview Heights, OH; and Ryan Wang of Upper Arlington, OH.
Prithiv Arokiadass of Beaverton, OR won the Elementary (grades K-2) Reserve Under 500 section with a perfect 4.0. A six-way tie for second at 3.0 included Charvi Bora of Redlands, CA; Karl Durant of Wilmington, DE; Shreyas Krishnan of Glen Allen, VA; Ian McKee of Gainesville, FL; Nina Yang of Beachwood, OH; and Yang Yu of Cary, NC.

These scholastic events are great for both new and experienced players. We have one more tournament left in the GCSCL series, and there is still time to enter. Progress with Chess provides USCF memberships for new or expired players.
