The 23rd Annual Carl Bowers Tournament
April 2nd, 2026 – Cleveland, Ohio
Cleveland Students Celebrate Chess at the Downtown Library!
Progress With Chess was honored to host the 23rd Annual Carl Bowers CMSD Chess Tournament on Thursday, April 2nd 2026, on the second floor of the Louis Stokes wing of the Downtown Cleveland Public Library.
Students had the opportunity not only to participate in a fun, inclusive chess tournament experience for new players, but they also had the opportunity to play giant chess, participate in a simultaneous exhibition with IM Calvin Blocker, meet and greet Cleveland Police Officers and Congresswoman Shontel Brown, and explore the CPL Main Branch’s offerings in the new TechCentral 2.0!
Students from all over the city came together to participate in a continuation of a longstanding tradition and partnership between the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and our organization, which not only brings schools together, but also provides students an opportunity to connect and engage with a group of Cleveland’s finest over the board.
We would like to extend our gratitude to Detective Carl Bowers, a longtime supporter of our organization and of this event, along with the Black Shield Police Association, The Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association, and the Cleveland Police Foundation, for providing their time and energy to support chess in the Cleveland schools.
As another facet of the tradition of this event, students had the opportunity to face off against International Master Calvin Blocker, one of the strongest chess players to come from Cleveland! All students received a US Chess Federation travel magnetic chess set and commemorative event t-shirt.
We would also like to thank Cleveland’s own congresswoman Shontel Brown, for supporting our event and for providing inspiring words for our students as part of our awards ceremony.
Congratulations to our 2026 Champions!
- Elementary K-5 Champions - Campus International School
- Middle School 6-8 Champions - Orchard Middle School
- High School 9-12 Champions - Cleveland School of the Arts
Like many extracurriculars, chess provides students with ample opportunities to learn beyond how the pieces move – chess can teach students how to win and lose with grace and propriety, chess teaches abstract geometry and sequencing, chess trains memory. The study of chess itself is a study of cultural history, not dissimilar from the study of art or music. We believe that all students should have the opportunity to follow their interests, to best suit their own learning – and we believe that there are many students in Cleveland, who, given the opportunity to learn chess, would greatly enjoy and thus benefit from its study. If you find that our mission seems worth supporting, and have had positive experiences with our programs, please consider donating to support our initiatives to provide chess clubs and tournaments in Cleveland’s public schools.
We express the utmost gratitude to the local organizations and companies who sponsored this event. In addition to those already mentioned, we would like to thank our sponsors RPM, the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, the Cleveland Public Library, the George Gund Foundation, and the Cleveland Foundation, for their longstanding commitment to providing quality chess education through their support of our programs.
